What is a P7M file and how to open it
A P7M file is a document digitally signed according to the CAdES standard (CMS Advanced Electronic Signatures, defined by ETSI TS 101 733). The extension name comes from the MIME type application/pkcs7-mime. In practice, the original document — a PDF, an XML invoice, a DOCX — is wrapped inside an ASN.1 cryptographic envelope that contains the signer's digital signature and associated certificates.
P7M files are extremely common in Italian Public Administration and e-invoicing (FatturaPA): contracts, official acts, electronic invoices, notarial deeds, and administrative communications are almost always signed in this format. They are also encountered in any workflow involving qualified electronic signatures under eIDAS regulation.
